About the School
Electrical Training Institute is a joint venture between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 481 and the National Electrical Contractors Association.
This program offers students the opportunity to earn wages while learning the skills needed for rewarding careers in the electrical industry.
Students receive thousands of hours of instruction and on-the-job training for five years.
Among other topics, the curriculum covers subjects on electrical wiring and circuitry, computer programming, instrumentation, and telecommunications.
The program also covers safety and OSHA training.
To qualify for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be at least 17 years of age
- Complete one year of high school algebra
- Successfully complete an aptitude test
- Have a valid driver’s license
The application fee is $30.
Applications are accepted in person at the office Monday thru Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. or online.
After completing the application, prospective apprentices must take an aptitude test and sit for an interview with the program’s trustees.

2Lincoln Tech
About the School
Lincoln Tech allows students to prepare for rewarding careers through hands-on training with the same equipment used by professionals in the industry.
The Indianapolis campus is located near Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Indianapolis Speedrome.
The total cost for the Associate of Applied Science Degree program in Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology Service Management is $33,344.
This includes tuition, books, uniforms, registration fee, student and technology fees, and the estimated cost of tools.
Lincoln Tech is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges.
Courses Offered
An Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology program is available at the school’s Indianapolis campus.
Students enrolled in this program can earn a diploma or work toward an associate’s degree.
The campus includes a pre-wired Smart House and other facilities that allow students enrolled in the Electrical and Electronic Systems Technology program to practice the latest techniques in installation, fire alarms, fiber optic cabling, and more.

3Fort Wayne Electrical JATC
About the School
Fort Wayne Electrical JATC is a six-member committee that includes representatives of IBEW Local Union 305 and The Central Indiana Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Association.
JATC trains apprentices for all of the Union Electrical Contractors in a nine-county jurisdiction.
Courses Offered
The following programs are available at Fort Wayne Electrical JATC:
- Inside Wireman- a five-year program that includes 900 hours of classroom instruction and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training
- Telecommunication Installer Technician- a three-year program that covers 480 hours of related classroom training at the Training Center
Apprentices earn a wage for the on-the-job training hours.
Inside wireman, apprentices earn a salary that starts at 40 percent of the Journeyworker’s wage while the starting salary for Telecommunication Installer Technician Apprentices is 50 percent of the Jouryenworker’s wage.
Apprentices receive raises gradually as they advance in their training.
Apprentices who complete additional classes can receive an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Apprenticeship Technology through a partnership with Ivy Tech Community College.

4Purdue University
About the School
Purdue University offers training in the electrical field and computer engineering through its Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Established in 1888, this is the largest school at Purdue University.
The university has been accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools since 1913.

5IEC of Kentucky and Southern Indiana
About the School
IEC of Kentucky and Southern Indiana is the local chapter of the National Independent Electrical Contractors Association.
The association is an approved education provider for Kentucky electrical license continuing education.
The training emphasizes subjects on safety as well as professional development.
Currently, 230 apprentice electricians are enrolled in the local training program and over 1,000 people are enrolled in IEC continuing education programs each year.
Courses Offered
The association provides an apprenticeship that includes 156 hours of classroom instruction each year for four years.
The curriculum covers residential, commercial, and industrial wiring, motors, generators, motor controls, programmable controls, the National Electrical Code, blueprint reading, and many other topics.
The program is fully accredited by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Kentucky Apprenticeship.
It is also fully accredited by ACE for up to 37 hours of college credit.

6NECA/IBEW Electrical Training Center
About the School
NECA/IBEW Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee has been preparing students for careers in the electrical construction industry since 1944.
They offer the first electrical apprenticeship program registered with the Department of Labor in the State of Indiana.
Courses Offered
Apprentices complete a five-year apprenticeship program registered and approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship of the United States Department of Labor.
The curriculum covers educational areas such as electrical theory, lighting, and power distribution, industrial controls, testing equipment, high voltage distribution, and more.
Apprentices also learn about instrumentation, communications, computers, fire alarm systems, welding, job site management, and other topics.
The school also offers First Aid, CPR, and OSHA training.
During training, commercial/industrial apprentices are paid a percentage of what Journeyworkers earn.
The salary starts at 40 percent of the Journeyworker’s scale and increases gradually, as trainees advance in their training.

9IEC Indy
About the School
IEC Indy offers a program that prepares students for careers in the electrical field.
The Electrical Apprenticeship helps students earn their Journeyworker certification after two or four years of training.
Founded in 1957, the Independent Electrical Contractors is a national trade association.
Courses Offered
Apprenticeships combine paid on-the-job training with classroom instruction to prepare skilled workers.
In total, the IEC apprenticeship includes a minimum of 576 hours of classroom instruction and a minimum of 8,000 hours of on-the-job training at an electrical contracting company.
After successfully completing the program requirements, apprentices receive Completion Certificates from the IEC and the Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship.
The following three electrical programs are available:
- Four-year Traditional Apprenticeship
- Two-year Accelerated Apprenticeship
- Full-Time Electrical Training Program- a 40-week program that meets Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 7:30 to 3:30 and covers the ACE accredited curriculum and also credits 2,000 hours of on-the-job training
